20th Anniversary Event Was Great Event
On September 11, 2021, the Rotary Club of Centennial celebrated its 20 anniversary.
Chartered back on May 10, 2001, the party was the culmination of a brilliant series of guest
speakers and tributes to 20 years of Service Above Self, all orchestrated by the committee chair
Katherine Henschen Hauff.

More than 80 members, guests, and VIPs gathered at the Cherry
Creek Marina Lakehouse to enjoy a thoughtful presentation, including remarks from Mayor
Stephanie Piko, District Foundation Chair David Willman, and District Governor Ray
Anderson. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of 36 members for receiving
their first to seventh recognition levels as Paul Harris Fellows. Our sincere thanks go out to
everyone who made the evening such a memorable success.

 It was a great celebration!

Woohoo! Woohoomanity

On Sept. 24, eight brave cyclists mounted up and biked 25 miles through Denver. This was the Woohoomanity challenge, a joint fundraiser of several Denver area Rotary clubs. Four members of the Rotary Club of Centennial participated along with friends and family members. The four stalwart Rotarians were  Mary Alice Jackson, Doug Mazezka, our president, Trip Butler, and Jon Bellum.

They were accompanied by Sherry Butler, Mary Alice Jackson son Wayne, and Deb  & Rob Nyland (friends of the Butler's).
Mary Alice, John, and Tripp all reported that the weather was glorious and that they had an absolutely great time. Some of their route was through part of downtown Denver, something that the riders thoroughly enjoyed. A number of Centennial Rotarians who had chosen not to participate in the ride supported the event through donations. In fact, we raised $3,500 through these donations..  This money will be used in support of our End Polio campaign.

Woohoo indeed!

Board Votes To Assisst Afgan Refugee Family
In an impromptu vote on Oct. 4, the Club's Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve a request of $3500.00 to help sponsor an Afghan refugee family. Of this $3500,  $3000.00 will be matched by the district. We will raise $3000.00 from three other clubs that will also be matched. That total will be $12,000.00. The extra $500.00 is to ensure we are not underfunded. If it's not needed, we will return the money to the foundation. The total amount for the project is $12,500.00, which will be used for rent, household items, clothes, food, educational items, and other supplies the family may need.

Jean Henry, who is chairing this event, reports that she has had an amazing response but there are still some open items. If you are donating a small item feel free to bring it to the meeting and we will collect it there. For larger items, will coordinate a drop-off or pick-up once the apartment is leased.

Lutheran family services tell us that they are also in need of clothes. As a result, we will begin to collect clothes donations in advance of knowing specific family sizes. Those that won't work for the Rotary refugee family will be donated to the LFS

Comments from the LFS: "Most families are arriving with much less than a full wardrobe. They've acquired a change or two of clothes at the military bases where they were vetted and background checked but still need of clothes to prepare for the winter in Colorado."

If you are donating clothing ...

1. Please make sure all garments are gently used with no tears or stains.
2. All socks, underwear, bras, and shoes must be new and unworn.
3. Smaller adult sizes are needed more than large sizes (extra small, small, and medium).
4. Please make sure sizes are clearly marked.

There is a Google docs page where you can see those items that are still needed. They are in black print. The link to this page is: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uIQeAfHsnjSVIDVVPmb_gYzSp2x26c0eYmVbh8vEh9U/edit?usp=sharing

Brazil Sets A Record
This article is about something that occurred in 1980 but I thought, given this months emphasis on eradicating polio, it was still timely
On a single day in 19 80,17.5 million, Brazilin children were given the polio vaccine. And it happened because of a YouTube program.

On October 17, Brazil's and polio now coordinators and public image coordinators organized a nationwide YouTube program dubbed tell her polio. Featuring pre-recorded messages from Rotary leaders and Brazilian celebrities, the 45-minute program generated more than 2100 views and about $130,000 in donations, made online and through a QR code created for the effort. Members of nearly 300 Rotaract clubs contributed; more than half of those Rotaractorswere first time givers to End Polio Now.

This Month's Chuckle

This months chuckle is the story of a woman who consumed three plates of beans and ultimately had to deal with a certain amount of discomfort
During lunch at work, I ate 3 plates of beans (which I know I shouldn't). When I got home, my husband seemed excited to see me and exclaimed delightedly, "Darling I have a surprise for dinner tonight." He then blindfolded me and led me to my chair at the dinner table. I took a seat and just as he was about to remove my blindfold, the telephone rang. He made me promise not to touch the blindfold until he returned and went to answer the call. The beans I had consumed were still affecting me and the pressure was becoming unbearable, so while my husband was out of the room I seized the opportunity, shifted my weight to one leg and let one go. It was not only loud, but it smelled like a fertilizer truck running over a skunk in front of a garbage dump!

I took my napkin from my lap and fanned the air around me vigorously. Then, shifting to the other leg, I ripped off three more. The stink was worse than cooked cabbage. Keeping my ears carefully tuned to the conversation in the other room, I went on releasing atomic bombs like this for another few minutes. The pleasure was indescribable! Eventually the telephone farewells signaled the end of my freedom, so I quickly fanned the air a few more times with my napkin, placed it on my lap and folded my hands back on it feeling very relieved and pleased with myself.

My face must have been the picture of innocence when my husband returned, apologizing for taking so long. He asked me if I had peaked through the blindfold, and I assured him I had not. At this point, he removed the blindfold, and twelve dinner guests seated around the table, with their hands to their noses, chorused, "Happy Birthday!"
