Community Service Activities and Projects: 
  • Hosted the second annual State of Our City to provide a forum for the Mayor of the City of Centennial to communicate to citizens and business leaders in the community
  • Our Club partnered with Home Depot to remodel the Laundry Room and Reception Area of the Denver Children’s Home.  Home Depot did the construction and donated a new washer and dryer.  Centennial Rotarians painted both areas.
  • Donated Gifts to the Denver Children’s Home to be distributed by Santa Claus
  • Centennial Rotarians walked the Willow Spring area and picked up trash.  South Suburban Recreational District erected a sign to communicate that the Centennial Rotary Club is responsible for this open space.
  • Donated school supplies and clothing to the Hurricane Katrina evacuees
  • Coat Drive for earthquake victims in Pakistan
  • Habitat for Humanity participation
  • Collected and donated books to the Granby Library, which had been damaged by deranged man with an armored plow
  • Donated food and money to Sox Place.
  • Helped Cliff Dougal “Santa” after he had to evacuate his apartment after the discovery of asbestos
Vocational Service Activities and Projects: 
  • Sponsored a student to the Rotary Youth Leadership camp
  • Centennial Rotarians assisted students with reading at Carl Sandburg Elementary School on a weekly basis
  • The Foundation awarded a scholarship to Karli Wurpel, a senior at Cherry Creek High School
International Service Activities and Projects: 
  • Our Club hosted the Winter Orientation Weekend for 22 Inbound Exchange Students at the Lone Tree Recreation Center.  The students had meetings on Saturday morning and were free to use the recreational facilities in the afternoon.  Saturday evening included Centennial Rotarians and was a blast with plenty of Pizza, Karaoke, Basketball and Bungee Run.  The students were hosted Friday and Saturday nights by Club members.
  • Co-hosted a Group Study Exchange from Finland and Estonia with the Highlands Ranch Rotary Club.
  • A core group of members sorted medical supplies once a month for Project Cure.

Special Events: 
  • As special project for the Centennial year, our club presented the new Smokey Hill library with a display case for use by the library.  The front of the case includes the Rotary Logo.
  • Also, the Club and several members joined forces and designed and purchased T-shirts for the exchange students.  The T-shirts were tie-dyed and printed on the back was Rocky Mountain Youth Exchange World Tour with a list that included the name and country of each student.  The T-shirts were given at the District Annual Meeting and were wildly popular with the students.
  • A group of young people, including two Sherpas from Nepal spoke at our February meeting about their adventure scaling Mount Everest to celebrate Rotary’s Centennial Year.
  • Past President Tom Buck and his wife Barb traveled with a group of Rotarians to Cambodia and visited the school where we previously donated money for sewing machines and a wall to protect the school.
  • The club was recognized by the City of Centennial for hosting the State of Our City with a plaque that was presenting at a city council meeting.  The plaque will be displayed at the city offices.  The city also gave each club member a fifth anniversary mug.

New Activities begun this year: 
  • We started a new tradition of auctioning travel gifts at the Holiday Party.  When members travel, they bring back a gift that is contributed to the auction.
  • We started a new tradition of a Changing of the Guard Celebration and Awards Ceremony.  The evening was a Hawaiian theme, including leis, tropical decorations and plenty of good food and drink.
  • Randy Pote introduced the Invocation Book to Centennial Rotary and the club paid for the publication of the book.  One book was given to each club in District 5450.  We ask for a donation of $30 per book to be used to continually publish and distribute the book.  Randy’s asked his Father-in Law, a Navy Chaplin to write down all of the invocations he had composed.  These invocations were organized by Randy’s wife Mary around the Rotary year and by season and provide members with a meaningful source of invocations for club meetings.
  • The Centennial Rotary Foundation started a tradition of members filling piggy banks with spare change bringing and them to a designated club meeting.  The banks were weighed and Pete A. counted the change with a counting machine from his bank.  Prizes were given for the heftiest pig and for the most money collected.
  • Laurie Christensen, Marc Garfinkel and Roxy interviewed the first Ambassadorial Scholar candidate to be sponsored by club.

Awards: 
  • Rotarian of the Year – Pete Ablanczy, who is a modest person who leads and motivates by his example.  He was chosen for this award for his continuous service to the Club Foundation, patron development for The State of Our City, getting the window and grate donations for the Denver Children’s Home, keeping us laughing by getting locked in the security van during Wild on Tourism, providing us with stimulating weekly programs, and developing the Blue Marble drawing!
  • Four Avenues of Service Award – Jennifer Holschuh
  • Club Service – Randy Pote, for his work on the Invocation Book project.
  • Community Service – Dan Hoopes, for his work with the Denver Children’s Home
  • International Service - Dan Ruparel, for his work on Youth weekend and t-shirt design.

  • Rainmaker Award  - Mark Gale, for bringing us the Wild on Tourism project and continuously presenting the club with fundraising ideas
