Our club secretary, Karen Fleck, was almost a native of Colorado as she was born in Sedgwick County, across the border in the NE corner of Colorado, where she spent her youth. She worked in the sugar beet factory in Ovid as working in this factory was sort of a family affair, until the factory was shuttered --- along with 17 other Colorado sugar factories.
Karen's first job out of the sugar beet mill was as a teacher at Head Start, taking care of, and teaching children of the migrant workers who helped grow those sugar beets.

She attended the University of Denver as a non-traditional student, where she conducted research on the children of divorce.

Karen's first job in the insurance industry after moving to Denver was with Cigna, which turned into her life’s career, ending, as it did,  when she retired three years ago. She now spends her time with our Rotary club, not only as club secretary but is one of our hardest-working Rotarians. Karen not only delivers Meals on Wheels several times a month, but also chairs our King Sooper food drives, does peach sales, and volunteers for a host of other projects that she says provides her with rewarding volunteer opportunities.

Karen's love lies in the outdoors and camping adventures, with a bucket list that includes visiting (if not camping in) every national park in the US. She has a long way to go since she's only halfway through the list! Wish her luck and if you don't see her at some of our summer meetings you'll know she's off somewhere sleeping in a tent in one of our national parks.
